Krell

Great sound and picture starts at the source, and for DVD and CD playback, you can make no better choice than the Krell Evolution 525. It also automatically recognizes and plays 48KHz WAV, MP3, and audio files recorded on CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW,and DVD+R/RW media. An elegant slot loading mechanism eliminates drawer transferred vibrational errors.

The Evolution 525 CD/DVD Player is a modular design featuring reference caliber CD playback as well as an optional state-of-the-art video engine that provides stunning 1080p performance and video processing controls. The Evolution 525 can be outfitted with different outputs to match the requirements of any high performance audio or home theater system.

Configurations include:

  • Evolution 525t - audio only transport
  • Evolution 525v - 1080p DVD video transport, digital audio output only
  • Evolution 525a - High performance CD player with Krell CAST and balanced analog outputs
  • Evolution 525av - Complete package including audio and video options

Power Supply
The Evolution 525 uses a highly stable linear power supply rather than an inferior switching style to ensure more consistent and reliable disc drive operation. Separate power for the drive mechanism, digital circuitry, analog, and video circuitry prevents interference. A custom-wound toroidal power transformer, 10 times larger than those found in typical players, provides tremendous current reserves and assures low-noise analog stage operation. Extensive multi-regulation delivers rock-steady power to all gain stages, ensuring maximum dynamic impact.

Audio Circuitry Highlights
The Evolution 525a uses one balanced 24-bit/192 kHz DAC per channel. Conventional players use one DAC for both channels and convert the current output of the digital-to analog converters (DACs) to voltage, a process that invariably causes signal distortion. The Evolution 525 instead uses one DAC per channel and feeds the native balanced current output directly to balanced Krell Current Mode circuitry. The sonic penalties of current-to-voltage conversion are thus elegantly avoided. By using balanced DACs, the Evolution 525 maintains a dual differential balanced signal from the DACs all the way to the output connections. This lowers distortion and improves signal to noise ratio to their maximum levels. Evolution CASTand balanced connections are included for optimal stereo playback. A complete Evolution (source, preamp, amplifier) system, connected in CAST, reduces the number of voltage gain stages to the minimum: one. The resulting noise floor approaches the theoretical limit of technology.

Video Circuitry Highlights
With a dual-channel video format converter, the Evolution 525v or Evolution 525av outputs 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p via HDMI. Unlike other solutions that provide 1080p outputs through down- and up-scaling, the Evolution 525 utilizes 3D deinterlacing, providing state-of-the-art image quality for high-resolution, large-panel displays and projection systems. Extensive noise reduction, adaptive contrast enhancement and intelligent color remapping, frame-rate conversion, horizontal luma and chroma edge enhancement for the sharpest, most detailed image available. A full complement of video controls, in both the analog and digital domains, are included to maximize performance of a specific video display.
